Official source: Google: More ways to connect with the web from Search
On 15 October, Google announced updates to AI Mode and AI Overviews intended to make it easier for people to explore the web. The changes include clearer inline links, a dedicated section for official websites and updated news carousels.
For a business website, this is not a reason to rewrite every page for AI. It is a useful prompt to check whether the information a prospective customer needs is complete, current and available on a page that search engines can find.
New search interfaces may change how people discover a page. Clear information and a sound technical foundation still give them a reason to visit it.
What has changed
Google says the update makes source links more prominent within AI-generated responses and adds an official-site section for relevant searches. The company also says that news carousels will provide more context and links to timely articles.
These features will not show for every query or every business. The practical lesson is less about a new label for optimisation and more about helping customers reach the original, useful source when they need detail, reassurance or a next step.
What to check on your site
- Make essential pages answer the real question. Service, product and support pages should explain what is offered, who it is for, important limits, location or delivery information, and how to take the next step.
- Keep trust information current. Check contact details, prices or ranges where appropriate, policies, availability and any regulated or compliance-sensitive wording. Out-of-date information creates friction even when a page is found.
- Keep the page accessible. Important content should be available as text, have a clear canonical URL and be linked from sensible navigation. Avoid hiding the answer inside an image, a download or an unnecessarily complex interface.
- Give people a useful destination. A visitor arriving from any search feature should be able to understand the page quickly, explore supporting evidence and contact the business without starting again.
Measure the right outcome
It is sensible to watch Search Console and analytics for meaningful changes in impressions, clicks and enquiries, but not to infer too much from a short period of movement. Segment by the pages and customer journeys that matter, then look for a pattern over time.
A practical improvement could be a clearer service page, a better internal route to supporting information or a fix that allows an important page to be crawled and measured reliably. Those are useful outcomes whether a visitor arrives through a traditional result, an AI experience or a direct recommendation.
